You guys ready for a story?
I have a distinct memory from my childhood of Sharpay singing a song “My Boi and Me” from Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure. The main line is “Me and my boi, my boi and mee.” I have since replaced “boi” with “bowl” when describing my relationship with smoothie bowls.
Smoothie bowls make me so happy. I don’t care what time of day it is- I will have a smoothie bowl. I don’t care what the temperature is- I will have a smoothie bowl. Smoothie bowls are a gift from god. Okay- I’m done with my ode to smoothie bowls.
I initially made this recipe because I was out of frozen bananas, but wanted something in my smoothie bowl besides berries and protein powder. I found some frozen avocado in the freezer, and I immediately remembered my love for avocado in my smoothie. If you’ve never tried it before, you’re missing out.
Frozen avocado is a very underrated addition to smoothies. They add a creaminess that cannot go un-noticed, and the thickness is mind blowing. Like spinach, you cannot taste the avocado once it blends with the berries, so if you’re worried about that- you have nothing to fear.
This bowl adds the perfect amount of healthy fats (the avocado), fiber and nutrients (the berries- duh), and protein (if you add protein powder, which I highly recommend). I’m big on texture when it comes to my food, and the thickness of this bowl passed the test for sure 😉
INGREDIENTS (Serves One):
1/4 frozen avocado
1 cup frozen mixed berries
1 cup frozen blueberries
1 scoop protein powder* (optional, but I highly recommend if you want sustained fuel)
Handful of ice cubes
1/2 cup milk of choice
Toppings of choice**
1.) In a blender, add all your ingredients.
2.) Blend the ingredients. You’ll probably have to stop the blender and mix everything around, but that’s normal.
3.) Transfer to a bowl and freeze for about fifteen minutes to let it fully thicken (optional, but I’ve found this is key).
4.) After fifteen minutes, add your toppings and enjoy!
*- I used Vega Protein & Greens Mixed Berry
**- I recommend some granola, hemp hearts, coconut, goji berries, nut butter- the possibilities are endless!
