As a soon to be college student, I am constantly stressing. Whether it be the SAT (T- less than two months), AP’s (they’re in April yet I’m already freaking out), job applications (you know, for food and things), or college apps (I have nine months, but still), my mind is a constant train of “what if.” What if I don’t get the score I want on the SAT? What if I get a B on that math test? What if I don’t get into my dream school? What if… I could just relax?
Life has been one big “what if” lately, but I am determined to change that. One way I do that is through me time. I am a big believer in me time. Everyday, I find at least twenty minutes where I can unwind and relax. Usually this is in the morning, when I’m drinking my coffee. If you know me, then you know I like to have time in the morning to enjoy my coffee, as it always relaxes me and gets me ready for the day. By letting myself have this time, I find that I am calmer. On school days, I get up at 4:10 to workout before school, as it’s the only time I have. Afterwards, I get ready really quickly, and then I have about thirty minutes to relax. Usually I catch up on my social media during this time as well.
It may seem strange to most that I wake up so early to workout. My workout before school is another me time that I make. Sure, some days go by slower than others, and I may want to be sleeping, but I always feel so much better afterwards. That is what makes it my me time. I do it specifically for my health, not for someone else’s standards. The workouts always fuel me for the day, and that combined with my coffee time makes school mornings a little less horrid. Wow- I never thought I’d say that.
The point of this post isn’t to tell you to wake up before school and work out, or to spend an hour with your coffee. It’s to encourage you to find time for yourself, which is something many people do not do. We do so many things for others that when we step back, we leave no time for ourselves. So, I encourage you to wake up a few minutes earlier and enjoy your coffee. Make a nice breakfast and catch up on a good book. Kill your morning workout and enjoy your day. Do whatever makes you happy, but do it for you- not for others.
What do you do for your “me time?”
