“Whoh! That’s so cool!”
“So.. you like, cook for a living?!”
“Are you vegan!? What do you make?? Salads???”
These are some of the daily questions I receive when I mention my blog or Instagram. For some people, it’s cool- hey, she makes a living eating food and writing about it. For some, they think of it as strange- really, you think posting your oatmeal is cool? Whatever their opinion is, I usually get the same question- HOW DID YOU GET INTO COOKING?! Well, to be honest, it’s a long story.
For me, I’ve always enjoyed cooking on some level. When I was younger, that level was scrambled eggs with buttered toast or a smoothie with orange juice, vanilla ice cream, and frozen berries. As I got older, I discovered baking, and began to bake with my mom on the weekends. We would (and still do) make over four hundred cookies for my teachers as Christmas gifts since we can’t give out gifts over $20. From those two long days of cookie baking I discovered I enjoyed being in the kitchen. It was tiring, but I enjoyed every minute of it!
When I quit ice skating in 9th grade and began working out, I learned that I couldn’t eat how I was and maintain a healthy weight. I was never overweight, but I was never “fit”. That’s not a bad thing at all! However, I realized that working out was not going to keep me fit, and that eating well was what worked the most. Around the summer going into 10th grade, I began making simple meals like salads, tacos, oatmeal, etc. Yup, I discovered oatmeal a little over a year ago and now I cannot live without it. Oh, how times have changed!
That fall I created tennishealthfitness, and from there, my cooking motivation was created. I was following all these Instagrams that were so popular and I came to the conclusion that they did that because… well… THEY KNEW HOW TO COOK. It was as simple as that. Sure, I could cook a sweet potato in the microwave, but if you had asked me to make a Zucchini Quinoa Salad or a Fried Egg Grilled Cheese, I would’ve laughed in your face instead whip up some microwave potatoes.
I remember the day so well- Sunday of February break. I was on Instagram, and then it hit me… I SHOULD MAKE A BLOG! I had thought of it for a while, but I always made the excuse that I “didn’t have time” or that I “wasn’t creative enough”. Boy, was I wrong. Once I started the blog I began feeling inspired EVERYDAY. When I first started, I was making mostly oatmeal and pancakes. However, it was a goal of mine to work on savory recipes.
Once I started baking more, my Instagram really took off. Companies started noticing me. I was gaining more followers because I was creative with my meals. To top it all off… I had the urge to cook. Flash forward to now, and I spend my weekends cooking, photographing, and writing. I take my Instagram posts as serious as my AP classes. I love what I do, and I truly adore cooking.
I guess the point of this was to tell you how I got into cooking, but then it just turned into a late night ramble. I apologize. So, to recap: creating my food Instagram is what really sparked my love of cooking. I’m forever blessed to be able to do something I love (cooking and blogging) as my job!
