We’ve all been there. 9:45 on a Thursday night, math test the next day, history essay due Monday that you haven’t even started. I’ll admit this has happened to me often, and it was hard for me to find a reason to stay up. “I’ll study in the morning” “I’ll start the essay tomorrow”. While I do not support staying up late to study (sleep is SO important!!), I’m comparing this to a larger idea- motivation.
How can we motivate ourselves to finish that history paper? Study a few days ahead of time because you know you won’t have time later? I consider myself to be pretty decent at not procrastinating, and with this, I have discovered a sense of motivation. I’m here to share it with you!
1.) Think of the outcome
Lets take that test example. We all want A’s on tests, but with the A comes hard work. How badly you want that A will determine how hard you work. Motivate yourself with that goal grade, and you will find yourself more determined to work.
2.) Take breaks
Your mind will be exhausted from the constant stress of your task. To stray away from school, lets take blogging. I find myself struggling to write posts at time simply because I cannot think of ideas, which lessens my motivation. When this happens, I usually come back to it the next day with a fresh mind and clean slate. For studying, I take a ten minute break every hour to stretch, use the bathroom, check my phone, etc. I feel refreshed after I do this, and it’s incredibly helpful!
3.) DO NOT PROCRASTINATE
THIS IS MY BIGGEST TIP. As soon as you figure out you have something big, WORK ON IT. If you have a big research report due at work, START THE RESERCH. Starting your task will motivate you to finish because you want to be done with it. Your brain realizes this and goes into determined mode. This is key for me in school. As soon as I’m assigned a paper, I start my outline that day, and start writing it that night.
These are just some of my tips that help me- I’d love to hear more!
