Everyday I go on Instagram (if you’re not following me @ tennishealthfitness, you’re missing out- just sayin’ 😉 ) I see smoothie bowls galore for breakfast. Most days, I am in awe over how perfect they look- the ratio of granola to smoothie, the colors, the perfectly sprinkled hemp seeds, etc. As a perfectionist, I am always looking at my smoothie bowls thinking “ew ew ew- look at how the granola sinks in” or something of that sort. When my smoothie bowls look presentable, I take FULL advantage.
When I was younger (and I still do this as a treat to myself), I would go to tons of cafes in Southern California and get an acai bowl (Sambazon Cafe takes the cake for sure!) However, they LOAD their bowls with toppings- specifically granola. granola is not necessary bad for you, but with the amount that restaurants put on their bowls, it can lead to a bunch of unwanted added oils and sugar. I’ve discovered that a little granola goes a long way, especially with how delicious smoothies are.
Smoothie bowls are an art, and don’t let anyone tell you wrong. They require time (the limited time you have to snap an insta is extremely stressful), dedication (to scoop out every drop from the blender), and energy (the blender is work man!). You also need the perfect liquid to frozen fruit ratio and the perfect toppings. I prefer berry smoothies over others- mainly because I usually have frozen berries in my freezer. However, adding mango add’s the perfect touch! With that being said- let’s get started.
INGREDIENTS (Serves one):
1 cup frozen mixed berries
1/2 frozen banana OR 1 frozen peach (optional, but adds more creamy-ness)*
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup almond milk
8-10 ice cubes
Toppings (Optional, and can change depending on taste buds):
Unsweetened coconut shreds**
Slices of fruit**
*= I used one frozen peach in this
**= these are the toppings pictures
In a large blender, combine all these ingredients and BLEND BLEND BLEND. If need be, add more liquid as time goes on. You will have to stop it and mix a few times, but that is normal. Once done, pour into a bowl and add your toppings. Snap an insta and enjoy!
