I did it! I did it! I took the plunge and finally tried a yoga class!
After reading The Balanced Blonde’s countless blog posts on the benefits of yoga, along with hearing such great reviews about what it can do for my mind and body, I finally tried it. Was I scared? HECK YEAH. I think that fear came from the fact that I hadn’t done any sort of actual stretching in over two years (so since I stopped ice skating), and that I would be a complete failure.
I took the class at Core Power Encinitas, and for anyone who lives in San Diego, I HIGHLY recommend this location. When I walked in, the ambiance was very calming and welcoming. All around me, people were drenched in sweat from a good yoga session, so I knew I was in for a good class. Everyone was smiling and talking with each other, and I immediately felt relaxed. The locker rooms are very sleek and well designed as well, and I’m very glad they invested in that. After I put my stuff away and walked into Studio one, I grabbed some blocks and began stretching.
Now, let me tell you… this part was PAINFUL. Like I said, I haven’t done actual stretching in two years, so you can imagine my pain.
The studio is so well designed. All around me, there were mirrors so you could look at your form and posture, which was extremely handy. The ground was soft and comfortable, but obviously I had a mat with me.
Hello awkward mirror selfie!
When my instructor, Kayla, walked in and we began the class, I knew I was in for a treat. For the next hour, I was taken through basic yoga moves, and even though I couldn’t do almost ½ of them, I had a blast doing it! We first did some basic stretches to engage our entire body, which include various warrior poses, downward dogs, low planks, etc. I noticed myself going with the flow of the class, and really letting my mind run free.
As the class went on, my tension went away and my body felt more free. My muscles relaxed, and I noticed myself falling engaging in the class. Kayla went through some core movements with us, but she did it as such a great pace that I enjoyed the pain! She had a great assistant to help us with our posture along the way, as well as relax our muscles when we felt tense.
My favorite part of the class came at the end, where we did our last warrior pose. The assistant then came along and rubbed soothing oils on our skin, which calmed me even more.
By the time the class ended, I wanted to do more. I felt like I was in a new state of mind that I never wanted to leave. My body felt loose, and my mind seemed clear. I cannot wait to practice yoga more, and I can’t wait to see the changes I feel in my daily life. Even though it was only one class, I can tell I’m going to love turning into a yogi. Now I have an excuse to buy even more lulu’s 😉
And when I say I liked it, I REALLY REALLY liked it. Like I considered going back that same day for the afternoon class. I held back (actually, I didn’t- I was busy the rest of the day), and went the next day instead 😉
If you’re on the edge about yoga… DO IT! It’s so calming, and one class goes a long way.
