If you have been following my blog/social media for a while, or you know me in real life, then you would know that I HATE NUTS. Emphasize on the hate. However, recently I’ve been trying to incorporate them into my life, and it turns out that I LIKE the??? WHAT??? I’m so happy I do, because nuts provide so many health benefits! My personal favorite nut I’ve noticed is almonds, so that’s what we’re discussing today on Saturday Obsessions.
To start off, almonds are a healthy and balanced snack that pack a ton of punch! One serving of almonds (one oz) provides six grams of protein, 3.5 grams of fiber, and 14 grams of fat- nine of which are monounsaturated (aka the good fat!) Almonds can also help with your blood sugar, as they contain a high level of magnesium. If you’re struggling with diabetes, this is the nut for you! With the high level of magnesium comes a lower risk of having a high blood pressure, which is something many adults struggle with. With the higher levels of protein and fats, almonds keep you fuller for longer. This means that if you’re struggling with your weight, snacking on a small handful/one oz/1/4 cup almonds is good for you!
Many people struggle with his/hers cholesterol levels, and there are a bunch of foods that can help with that- almonds included. Having 1.5 oz of almonds a day lowers one LDL levels by 5.3mg/dL, all while maintaining the “good cholesterol” (HDL) levels. They can also help with keeping the LDL safe from oxidation, which is a very important in the heart disease process.
So… how can you get almonds in?? I make my own granola and add almonds to it, which adds a lovely crunch. Besides that, just eating them on their own in a yogurt bowl or with a homemade trail mix is another great snack! Obviously their is almond milk, but that is not really a snack. However, it is a great milk alternative and yet another way to get in almonds!
Hope you all learned something, and the numbers didn’t scare you. See you next week, and remember- eating healthy isn’t hard!
