Self care. It’s such a hard phrase to describe, and even a harder thing to do. When you think of self care, what does it mean to you? I’m sure my definition of self care is very different from yours. All I know is that self care is important, and not nearly enough people apply it. I’m the type of person that when I’m stressed, you can see it. AND I MEAN SEE IT. I get all red, and my mood changes from a calm, happy person to a rude, anxious person in a split second.
Back to the self care talk. I’m sure you always hear people raving about their massages they get at massage envy, or that long walk they took at sunset with their dog last week. Well, I got news for you- I don’t have the time for that, and I’m sure you’re not alone. Most of the time, self care methods take too much time and frankly, too much money, to really feel the effects. Thankfully, I’ve teamed up with Whole Foods Market Del Mar to bring you some simple ways to self care that don’t break the bank.
I freaking love baths. A nice bubble bath during the winter with a good book is one of the greatest feelings in the entire world. Baths have been proven to reduce stress, which makes your self care process that much more enjoyable. Plus, when you step out of the bath, you feel refreshed and clean, which will help attribute to a positive mindset. Sure baths aren’t something you can do every night, but once a week is never a bad thing.
For my baths, I love applying this homemade soap from my Whole Foods Market Del Mar. They make it on sight, and it’s only $1.50 per oz. That may seem like a lot, but in reality, a little goes a very long way. They were showing me how they make the soaps, and I was blown away. Not only is everything all natural and organic, but it’s all produced in San Diego. My favorite soaps are the lufa ones that really exfoliate my skin and leave me feeling refreshed.
2.) Apply some lotion
Sounds strange, right? Not really. When you apply lotion after the shower, you are not only exfoliating your skin, but you’re also rehydrating it. Since your skin is still partially wet, you’re trapping some of the moisture into your skin, which hydrates it and keeps it fresh. By hydrating your skin, you’re allowing the particles to rejuvenate themselves. Also, it just feels so good to have smooth legs, especially after showering and shaving.
When looking for a lotion, make sure you keep the ingredients to a minimum, and if there are lots of them, make sure they’re natural. I personally love the 365 Grapefruit body lotion. Citrus scents always make me feel more awake and fresh, so something like grapefruit is perfect for that. Whole Foods Market Del Mar lotions are my favorite because they’re incredibly inexpensive considering the amount you get. I used to be a lotion snob, but their lotion is better than a lot of the high end brands.
I love scents that are light and fresh because they don’t clog up your nose and make you feel sick. I’ve always been a fan of the smell of the laundry isle at grocery stores (strange????), so I think that’s why I like fresh scents!
3.) TREAT YO SELF
Girllllllll- when’s the last time you bought yourself some flowers or a chocolate bar? It’s about damn time we started realizing our achievements, and rewarding ourselves for all the hard work we do. So, I challenge you to buy yourself a nice bouquet of your favorite flowers on your way home from work tomorrow. Seems stupid, but it’s so effective. I picked up one of these bouquets the other day, and my house already feels warmer and happier. Thus, my mood is lifted everytime I see them. Maybe it’s the placebo effect, but it works!
I also picked up some pastries for myself the other day at Whole Foods Market Del Mar. Their pastries are always fresh made, and are very high quality. I love all the unique flavors they can create, as well as the designs and creativity that goes into the presentation! It always feels so good to treat myself to some quality dessert, and I recommend you do the same.
And lastly, you can’t forget the chocolate! Whole Foods Del Mar always has quality chocolate on sale, so I snagged a bunch of bars for when I’m feeling down. They’ll do the trick 😉
So, moral of the story- give yourself the time you need. Don’t forget that while it’s awesome to help others, you also need to help yourself.
